The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)
According to the City of Rochester’s Forestry Division, “Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an exotic beetle that was imported accidentally into the United States on packing material that originated in Asia. EAB larvae feeds on the inner bark of ash trees, disrupting the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients. The EAB has already killed tens of millions of trees in the states where it has been detected. Other than New York, the beetle has been detected in 21 other states…” The City of Rochester website also states that a large area of Monroe County has been infected with the Emerald Ash Borer since 2010.
If the Ash Borer beetle infection is caught before full infestation occurs, treatment may be possible for individual trees. However, once the tree is deceased it becomes a safety issue and needs to be removed. This is where ArborScaper Tree & Landscape steps in and remedies the problem by removing the dead Ash tree.

Ash Borer Detection & Damage
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NY DEC), “The emerald ash borer is a very small but very destructive beetle… Adult beetles leave distinctive D-shaped exit holes in the outer bark of the branches and the trunk.”
NY DEC further states, “Increased woodpecker activity is often the first sign of an EAB infestation. This activity can lead to ‘blonding’, or large strips of bark falling off. On the trunk and branches, look for small, D-shaped holes that are left by emerging beetles. When the tree’s bark splits or falls off, S-shaped larval galleries may be visible.”
